1. Harmonia axyridis was first recorded in Britain in 2004. Two subsequent earlier records were received from 2003. 2. The UK Ladybird Survey, a citizen science initiative involving online recording, was launched in 2005 to encourage people across Britain to track the spread of H. axyridis. Tens of thousands of people have provided records of H. axyridis and other species of ladybirds, creating an invaluable dataset for large‐scale and long‐term research. Declines in the distribution of seven (of eight assessed) native species of ladybird have been demonstrated, and correlated with the arrival of H. axyridis, using the records collated through the UK Ladybird Survey. 3. Experimental research and field surveys have also contributed to our understanding of the ecology of H. axyridis and particularly the process of invasion. Harmonia axyridis arrived in Britain through dispersal and introduction events from regions in which it was deliberately released as a biological control agent. The rapid spread of this species has been attributed to its high natural dispersal capability by means of both flight and anthropogenic transport. A number of factors have contributed to the successful establishment and indeed dominance of this polymorphic species within aphidophagous guilds, including high reproductive capacity, intra‐guild predation, eurytopic nature, high resistance to natural enemies within the invaded range, and potentially phenotypic plasticity. 4. ABSTRACT Unlike four control colonies of Amitermes which built normal, north-south oriented 'magnetic' mounds in northern Australia, four young colonies failed after exposure to experimental alteration of the earth's magnetic field. In November 1979, bar magnets were buried on either side at the base of each of three new nests of Amitermes laurensis Mjoberg and one new colony of A.vitiosus Hill. As controls, non-magnetized iron bars were disposed similarly in relation to three new nests of the former species and one of the latter. In September 1986, all four control nests had grown normally. However, not one of the treatment colonies survived and from what remained of the former nest in each case it is clear that the demise of the colonies occurred soon after the magnets were placed. We conclude that the failure of these colonies was the result of the changed magnetic environment. Whether 'magnetic' termites use magnetoperception as a cue to achieve their spectacular north-south orientation remains unknown, but the results of this field experiment weigh more for than against this possibility. 相似文献

Much of the recent work in ethnoscience has been concerned with the nature of folk taxonomies, an often stated definition of which requires that all folk taxa be monolexemically labeled. This paper offers evidence that unlabeled categories may also be of crucial taxonomic significance, and we feel that it is inappropriate to treat such categories apart from the named taxonomic entities of the system. More importantly, evidence presented indicates that by recognizing unnamed taxa one may gain an understanding of the structure of a particular semantic domain that is actually obscured if one focuses solely on lexically labeled units. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The daily fluctuation in mating responsiveness of Dacus tryoni was recorded through a range of light cycles. Evidence was obtained of strict control of the fluctuation by a circadian clock. The phase setting of the fluctuation in the different light cycles was in conformity with Aschoff's (1965) generalizations about circadian rhythms, and had no relationship to overt sexual behaviour occurring during the cycles. The amplitude of the fluctuation in mating responsiveness varied between cycles, suggesting possible variation in the amplitude of the oscillation of the circadian clock. 相似文献
